chapter 9
Lene Poulsen dialed the number of the fortune-teller from her office cluttered with reports and paperwork. Even though Petersen had chosen her to work alongside him in the Knudsen case a few weeks earlier, her main task was still to check her colleagues' reports before they were stored upstairs. This meant a double work, and it explained the tiredness she felt every day at the end of her shift. Now it was past one o'clock and apart from the sandwich she had eaten earlier with Hansen she would no longer be able to touch food until late at night.
The woman only answered the fourth ring with a suspicious voice, "Who are you looking for?" she asked, trying to seem natural.
"I'm a tourist. I came by yesterday to have you read the cards for me, but the studio was closed, so I thought I'd call. Is this Karin Johansen?" said Lene.
"Yes, has anyone told you about me?"
"Nobody at all. Me and my partner went around the neighborhood a bit, and then I read the sign underneath your apartment. I was curious, you know I don't believe much in these things, but it wouldn't hurt to try if you're willing to meet me."
"Where do you call me from?"
"We're downtown now, and we just had lunch."
"If you can get to me in half an hour, I'll wait for you. What's your name?"
"Lene Lanval. So I'll see you later."
Lene hung up the phone happy with the way things were going. She immediately called downstairs to get a car ready with a support officer and then walked out of the room. Petersen was engaged in a conversation on the phone, so she signaled to him that she was going and he raised his thumb as a sign of approval. From the look on his face, she was sure that his interlocutor, whoever it was, was giving him a hard time.
As she was descending the stairs, she wondered for a moment if it was his wife, but then she saw something strange distracting her from that thought.
Sergeant Berg was talking to Lender, and their facial expressions seemed friendly. Petersen hadn't told her what Superintendent Nielsen's decision was about the officer, but apparently he had just reconciled with his main opponent, the one he had accused the day before of leading him to a foul.
'They must have settled for nothing,' she thought to herself, then met the agent who had to accompany her and quickly left the police station, headed to Vesterbro.
Meanwhile, Petersen had just finished talking to his father-in-law upstairs. He never called him at the office, but he had just talked to his daughter and was alarmed by what she had told him about a possible separation. Of course, in his words it all seemed to be Lars' fault, so the inspector had to strongly defend himself against the man's accusations.
Ten years of a friendly relationship had been swept away by a phone call that lasted a few minutes. It was enough for Petersen
